How did I get infected with?

ServHelper Backdoor RAT is distributed through a spam email campaign, which targets retail companies and financial institutions. The scheme is simple. The threat actors write on behalf of well-known organizations. They use deceptive language and visuals to lure you into downloading the email attachments. The email contains two files: a PDF one and a Microsoft Word document. Both of the attachments are not viruses. Your anti-virus won’t flag them as dangerous. When you, however, try to open them, a message pops up. It asks you to enable the “Editing mode” of your file editor. Do not click on the “Accept” button. When you do, malicious macros download and install the virus. If you try your luck with the PDF attachment, however, you would be greeted by a message that states that your PDF viewer is outdated. The message contains malicious links which, again, download the virus, not the lasted version of your software. Do not give into naivety. Your caution can prevent these schemes from infecting your PC. Be vigilant and doubting. Treat all unexpected messages as potential threats. Take the time to verify the senders. If you receive a message, from your bank, for example, go to their official website. Compare the email addresses listed there to the questionable one. If they don’t match, delete the pretender immediately. And, of course, use your best judgment. If something looks suspicious, there’s probably a good reason for that. Do not let viruses like ServHelper Backdoor RAT trick you! Always take the time to do your due diligence!
